Krishnanagar Nadia Clay Doll Figurine Cooperative West Bengal

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Krishnanagar in the Nadia district of West Bengal is the home of a centuries-old tradition of hyper-realistic clay figure making, producing miniature human figures, animals, and nature scenes with extraordinary anatomical accuracy using natural clay from the Jalangi river. Krishnanagar clay dolls created by Pal-caste artisan families depict peasant life, rural occupations, and festival scenes in vivid naturalistic detail, and are collected as folk art items by museums internationally. The figures are made without a kiln using air-drying techniques and painted with natural and synthetic colours. The distinctive naturalistic style developed under Nadia Maharajas patronage in the 17th century and the tradition has passed through family workshops for over fifteen generations. West Bengal cooperative societies support the artisan cluster with subsidised material, design registration, and market access through Cottage and Small Scale Industries department emporiums. Krishnanagar clay figurines are sold alongside Kalighat painting and Bankura terracotta at Bengal craft fairs.
