Jalgaon Banana Cotton Tapti River Khandesh Maharashtra
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Jalgaon district is India's "Banana Capital" — the Grand Naine and Robusta banana varieties grown on the Tapti river alluvial soil of the Khandesh region produce the richest and sweetest bananas in central India, with Jalgaon bananas commanding premium prices in Delhi and Mumbai markets due to their thinner skin and richer flavour. The district also grows cotton (Sankar variety) on the black Deccan soil of Khandesh, a historical cotton trading region that supplied the Bombay mills' cotton demand through the colonial economy. Jalgaon's border with Madhya Pradesh at the Tapti river marks the cultural transition from Maharashtra's Marathi culture to Madhya Pradesh's Nimari tradition.
