Jaipur Razai Hand Block Quilts Jaipur Rajasthan
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Jaipur is famous for its hand block-printed razai (quilts) and bed linen, produced in the Sanganer and Bagru villages outside the city and in the old city block-printing quarters. The razai is a light cotton or silk quilt filled with locally grown cotton batting, its cover hand block-printed in sanganeri floral or bagh-style geometric patterns using natural or eco-certified dyes. Jaipur block print exports account for a major share of India's home furnishing export sector. The Sanganer style uses fine pastel floral patterns on white ground while Bagru uses earthy resist-print with dabu mud resist and natural indigo and madder dyes. The GI tag covers both Sanganer and Bagru print styles. Jaipur block printers are primarily Chippa community artisans. Large export-oriented workshops in Sanganer and small artisan cooperatives both supply the global home furnishing and fashion market.
