Palampur Tea Gardens and Birch Forest Ecology Kangra
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Palampur in Kangra district is the centre of the Kangra tea industry with numerous tea gardens spread across the green hill slopes. The combination of monsoon rainfall, moderate temperatures, and clay-loam soils creates ideal conditions for tea cultivation. Palampur's mixed landscape of tea gardens, paddy fields, and Himalayan forests creates exceptional visual beauty. Traditional knowledge of tea pruning cycles, shade tree management, and organic pest control methods is maintained by experienced garden workers and small tea growers. The Norbulingka Institute at Sidhbari near Dharamsala where Tibetan craftspeople produce traditional Buddhist arts has become an important cultural institution in the Kangra valley. Bird diversity in the tea garden landscape is high as the mixed habitat of managed garden and natural forest supports diverse species.
