East Godavari district — the "cultural capital of Andhra Pradesh" — sits astride the Godavari river delta and the Eastern Ghats tribal belt, combining coastal paddy agriculture with Eastern Ghats tribal communities (Koya, Kondh, Savara) who maintain forest-dependent livelihoods in the agency areas. The district's Rampa region in the hill agency is famous for the 1922-24 Rampa Rebellion led by Alluri Sitarama Raju against the colonial forest restrictions — an anti-colonial tribal uprising that predates the Bhagat Singh era. Rajahmundry (Rajamahendravaram) city on the Godavari is a major cultural centre — home to the Godavari river pushkaram (12-year sacred bath) that draws tens of millions, and the birthplace of Telugu language reform movements.
