Darjeeling First Flush Tea Estate West Bengal Premium
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Darjeeling district in West Bengal produces the most sought-after tea in the world — Darjeeling First Flush, harvested in February-March from high-altitude estates at 1000-2000 metres, is known for its unique muscatel (wine grape and floral) flavour, light golden liquor, and delicate aroma that no other tea region can replicate. The muscatel character develops due to a specific interaction between the Empoasca leafhopper insect bite on young leaves and the enzymatic response of the Camellia sinensis var. sinensis variety growing at altitude. Darjeeling has GI certification and sells First Flush lots to Japan, Germany, and the UK at Rs 10,000-50,000 per kg. Tea estate cooperative societies manage fair wages for 100,000 tea workers (predominantly Gorkha community), providing housing, school, and medical services.
