Birbhum Terracotta Temple Architecture West Bengal
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Birbhum district in West Bengal is renowned for its medieval terracotta temple architecture, most notably the cluster of temples at Bishnupur and the Joyrambati-Kamarpukur area associated with Sri Ramakrishna and Sarada Devi. Terracotta plaques depicting Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Krishnalila narratives cover temple facades in intricate low-relief panels. Cooperative artisans in Bishnupur and Panchmura continue to produce Bankura horse terracotta figurines — the iconic twin-cylinder body horse — as well as terracotta jewelry and decorative tiles. Panchmura is the main Bankura horse production village where cooperative families maintain kilns and traditional hand-moulding techniques. Bishnupur cooperative crafts emporium connects artisans with national and international craft buyers.
