Bhajan and Kirtan Traditions of Beed District

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Beed district's communities maintain active bhajan (devotional song) and kirtan (devotional narrative performance) traditions associated with the Varkari movement and local bhakti saints. The district's kirtan performers travel to neighbouring villages performing at naming ceremonies, death anniversary rites, and temple festivals. The kirtan form in Beed combines philosophical teaching, narrative storytelling, audience participation, and musical performance, lasting 3-6 hours. Beed's bhajani mandals (devotional song groups) meet weekly in homes and temples, singing abhangas of Tukaram, Namdev, and Dnyaneshwar with harmonium and tabla accompaniment. The Phule Dhamma Ramzan kirtan tradition, combining Ambedkar's Buddhist philosophy with traditional kirtan structure, is a significant innovation originating in Marathwada's Dalit communities. Beed district produces several recognised kirtankars whose performances draw large audiences at religious fairs.
