Bamboo Cane Weaving East Siang Arunachal Pradesh

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Bamboo and cane weaving is a universal traditional craft of all Arunachal Pradesh tribal communities, with particularly fine traditions in the Adi community of East Siang and Upper Siang districts. The Adi use locally harvested bamboo (Dendrocalamus hamiltonii and Bambusa balcooa) to weave daa (dao sword scabbard), palings (baskets), sikori (hunting basket worn on back), mats, and house partition panels. Adi women are the primary weavers, creating intricate diamond and chevron pattern bands in natural black and yellow bamboo strips. Cane furniture for interiors and decorative items for urban markets are produced by artisans in Aalo (Along) and Itanagar. The Arunachal Pradesh Rural Development Department provides loom equipment and raw material support. Bamboo craft products from northeast India are promoted by the North East Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC) for export.
