Aizawl Mizo Handloom Bamboo Puan Weaving Mizoram Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Aizawl district in central Mizoram is the state capital and the centre of Mizo cultural life — a predominantly Christian (Baptist and Presbyterian) society with one of India's highest literacy rates (91%+) and strongest community governance through the Young Mizo Association (YMA). Mizo women weave the Puan (traditional wraparound garment) on backstrap loom — the Mizo handloom tradition produces distinct check, stripe, and geometric pattern fabrics in cotton and silk used for everyday dress and ceremonial occasions. Mizoram's bamboo forests (moso and other species) are harvested for construction, furniture, bamboo shoot (vegetable) processing, and the bamboo handicraft industry. Aizawl's unique hill-city architecture — buildings stacked on steep slopes connected by staircases — is a testament to Mizo engineering on difficult terrain.
