Kashipur Traditional Pottery and Clay Craft

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Kashipur town in Udham Singh Nagar has a community of traditional potters (Kumhars) producing earthenware using locally sourced clay. Functional items like water pots, cooking vessels, diyas for festivals, and decorative figurines are shaped on hand-operated wheels and fired in traditional kilns. Festival seasons bring heavy demand for clay lamps and ritual items. Some artisans have diversified into terracotta garden ware and decorative tiles. The craft faces competition from plastic and metal alternatives but survives through festival demand and a niche market for traditional cookware which is believed to improve food taste and health. Cooperative societies help potters access raw materials and urban markets.
