Garhwal Rifles and Martial Heritage Tehri District
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Garhwal Rifles regiment with headquarters at Lansdowne (Pauri) recruits extensively from Garhwal including Tehri district, maintaining a martial tradition dating to 1887 when the regiment was formed under British command. The Garhwali soldiers earned fame in multiple wars and the regiment carries 17 battle honours. Traditional martial arts knowledge and physical conditioning practices of hill communities made Garhwalis valued soldiers. The Garhwal Rifles tradition creates strong community connections between serving soldiers, veterans, and civilian populations in Tehri and Pauri districts. Army recruitment fairs (bharti melas) are major events in hill district culture. Veterans who return to villages bring resources, education, and leadership that support rural development.
