Kedar Valley Folklore and Garhwali Musical Traditions

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Kedarnath valley and surrounding Rudraprayag district are repositories of ancient Garhwali folklore, devotional songs, and performance traditions. Jaagar is a night-long singing ceremony invoking deities and ancestral spirits performed by Jagaria (ritual singer) accompanying a devotee seeking divine guidance. The Pahari instruments used include Dhol (large drum), Damaun (small kettledrum), and Turhi (curved horn trumpet). Narrative ballads (Chaiti songs) describing pilgrimages to Kedar and local legends are transmitted through family singing traditions. The cultural memory of the 2013 tragedy is being incorporated into new narrative traditions documenting survival stories and community resilience. Seasonal festivals like Baasanti (spring celebration) involve community-wide singing and dancing.
