Timru and Himalayan Medicinal Plant Knowledge Dehradun

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The forests around Dehradun are rich sources of Himalayan medicinal plants used in Ayurvedic and traditional healing. Timru (Zanthoxylum armatum), also called Tejphal, is harvested from wild trees for its aromatic berries used as spice and medicine for digestive disorders and toothache. Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) growing along forest streams is valued for memory enhancement. Local vaidyas (traditional healers) maintain knowledge of hundreds of plant preparations for treating common ailments. The Forest Research Institute at Dehradun documents and researches traditional plant knowledge. Community-managed Van Panchayat forests protect medicinal plant habitats while allowing regulated harvesting for local healthcare needs.
