Kumaoni Traditional Medicine and Vaidya Heritage Almora

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Almora hills maintain a living tradition of traditional Kumaoni medicine blending classical Ayurveda with regional folk healing practices. Hereditary vaidyas (traditional physicians) possess knowledge of hundreds of local medicinal plants and their preparations for common ailments. Kala jeera (black cumin), Kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa), Atees (Aconitum heterophyllum), and Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi) are key mountain medicinal plants found in higher altitude forests. Preparations for altitude sickness, joint pain from cold exposure, and digestive disorders suited to high-altitude conditions represent evolved local medical knowledge. AYUSH programs document and validate traditional formulations while supporting vaidyas through certification and integration with public health systems.
