Uppada Jamdani Sarees Andhra Pradesh

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Uppada is a coastal village in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh where weavers produce a distinctive lightweight jamdani silk saree with intricate supplementary weft patterns woven directly into the fabric without any chemical finishing. Uppada jamdani uses pure mulberry silk in an extra-weft technique to create floral and geometric patterns that appear to float on the transparent base fabric. The sarees are known for their feather-light weight — a 6-yard saree can weigh as little as 200g — and their elegant drape. The craft was traditionally confined to the Devanga weaving community of Uppada village. GI certification was granted in 2009. A dedicated weavers cooperative and APCO marketing support the craft. Uppada jamdani is prized by connoisseurs and is one of the most technically demanding silk weaving traditions in India.
