Tehri Garhwal Valley Desi Ghee Cow Cooperative Uttarakhand

Tehri in the Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand was the capital of the Tehri-Garhwal princely state and is now known as the site of the Tehri dam on the Bhagirathi river, but the surrounding mountain valleys maintain a highland cattle herding tradition producing badri cow desi ghee that is among the most prized pure clarified butters in India. The Badri or Pahadi cow is a small-framed indigenous hill cattle breed of exceptional hardiness adapted to Himalayan altitudes, producing A2 beta-casein milk that is the base for the distinctive aroma-rich desi ghee. Cooperative dairy societies in Devprayag, Chamba, and Pratapnagar areas collect badri cow milk from village herders and churn ghee in traditional copper vessels or modern cooperative butter churns. Tehri Garhwal mountain ghee sells at premium prices to urban consumers seeking A2 desi ghee. The Garhwal cooperative federation markets under Garhwal Ghee certification. Badri cow breed conservation is supported by cooperative cattle herding societies and state government.
