South Tripura Sabroom Handloom Cashew Sonamura Pottery Heritage
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
South Tripura district on the Bangladesh border at Sabroom (India's southernmost land border with Bangladesh) grows cashew on the red laterite hills — the district's cashew is processed in small units and sold locally. The district's Reang tribal community (also called Bru) weave the distinctive Risa shawl (a ceremonial cloth with red-dominant geometric patterns) and practice an intricate handloom tradition different from the Tripuri rignai. Sonamura in Sipahijala district (adjacent) is famous for its terracotta pottery and the Tulsibari weaving cooperative producing Tripuri textiles for export. South Tripura's forests support teak, rubber, and sal timber, and the district's Hiracherra riverine area is a wildlife corridor for elephant movement between Bangladesh and Tripura.
