Nashik Grape and Wine Viticulture Maharashtra

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Nashik district in Maharashtra is India's premier wine and grape production region, accounting for over 80 percent of India's wine production and earning the title "Wine Capital of India." The Nashik valley's high altitude (550-700 meters), well-drained basalt soil, and dry Mediterranean-type climate favour Thompson Seedless, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chenin Blanc varieties. Indian wine pioneers Sula Vineyards, York Winery, and Grover Zampa established large vineyards in Nashik from 1990s, producing wines now exported to over 25 countries. The Nashik Grape Growers Cooperative serves table grape producers supplying fresh grapes to Mumbai, Pune, and export markets in Europe and Southeast Asia. Raisin production from Thompson seedless grapes is a major processing industry. Nashik's wine tourism (vineyard stays, harvest festivals) is a growing rural income source.
