Ludhiana Khadi Charkha Spinning Heritage
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Ludhiana district hosts one of Punjab's oldest Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) spinning centres, established during the Independence movement when Gandhi's charkha campaign mobilised village women to spin cotton into yarn. The centre at Ludhiana trains artisans in ambar charkha spinning of cotton and wool and produces handspun yarn that is woven into khadi fabric for sale at KVIC emporiums. Khadi from Ludhiana is valued for its coarse texture that keeps the wearer warm in winter and cool in summer, and is promoted for government uniforms and sustainable fashion buyers.
