Hampi Vijayanagara Royal Complex Architecture of Koppal-Bellary Region
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Hampi (largely in Vijayanagara district but historically administered from Koppal region) is the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara Empire (1336–1646 CE) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Virupaksha temple — still in active worship — has been continuously used for over 600 years and its gopuram is the tallest pre-modern structure in Karnataka. The royal enclosure's Lotus Mahal, Elephant Stables, and the octagonal watch-tower display a fusion of Hindu and Islamic architectural elements unique to Vijayanagara. The empire's craft infrastructure — represented by the Hampi bazaar street, the weighing platform (royal scales), and merchants' quarters — reflects a sophisticated urban economy. Stone chariot, musical pillars, and the Ugra Narasimha monolith are iconic sculptural achievements.
