Kanjivaram Silk Weaving — Tamil Nadu

Contributed by System

Kanjivaram (Kanchipuram) silk sarees are woven entirely in silk with zari borders in separate sections interlocked on the loom — allowing the body and border to bear different designs. The weaving community, traditionally Devanga Chettiar and Saligram weavers, use mulberry silk yarn degummed and dyed with chemical or natural dyes. The hallmark is the korvai technique where border threads are interlocked with body threads so the border never tears away. Zari uses real silver thread coated with gold. A single saree takes 3–14 days depending on pattern complexity. GI tag protects Kanchipuram silk. Peak demand is wedding season October–February.
