Kamrup Kamakhya Temple Pitha Cotton Mekhela Chador Assam
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Kamrup district — the heartland of the Brahmaputra valley and Guwahati city — contains the Kamakhya Shakti Pitha, one of India's 51 Shakti shrines and the pre-eminent tantric goddess temple in Northeast India, where the Ambubachi Mela (June, when the goddess is believed to menstruate) draws 500,000+ tantric practitioners, sadhus, and devotees. The district's cotton cultivation and the Assamese Mekhela Chador (two-piece wrapped garment) weaving tradition — in which the Sualkuchi silk weaving cluster of Kamrup produces the finest muga silk mekhela chador using golden-hued wild silk — represent Assam's textile heritage at its finest. Guwahati's role as Northeast India's largest commercial city makes Kamrup the economic gateway for the eight sisters of the Northeast.
