Tribal Bamboo Craft of Hingoli's Forest Villages
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The forest villages of Hingoli district's eastern belt, inhabited by Gond and Kolam tribal communities, maintain traditional bamboo crafting as both a livelihood and domestic necessity. Bamboo (Dendrocalamus strictus) harvested from community forest plots is split, dried, and woven into baskets (tokri), mats (satrangi), fish traps, and agricultural implements. The Kolam tribal embroidery tradition, using chain stitch in bold geometric patterns, adorns clothing and household textiles. Traditional healers in Hingoli's tribal areas use a pharmacopoeia of forest herbs distinct from mainstream Ayurvedic practice, treating malaria with chirayata, skin conditions with karanj oil, and fever with giloy. TRIFED (Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation) buys bamboo craft produce from Hingoli tribal cooperatives at fair prices for sale through government emporiums.
