Timber Apple and Peach Cultivation Solan District

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Solan district at medium elevations of 1000-1800 metres supports cultivation of peaches, plums, and apricots alongside lower-altitude horticulture and higher-altitude apple orchards. Traditional Solan peach varieties developed through farmer selection over generations have strong flavour profiles though smaller size than commercial varieties. Peach and apricot cultivation using traditional grafting and budding techniques is transmitted from older to younger farmers in orcharding families. Fruit processing including sun-drying apricots into small golden pieces (khumani or kajari) and making stone fruit preserves extends the harvest season value. Traditional knowledge of rootstock selection, grafting timing, and post-harvest handling is practically transmitted through apprenticeship alongside scientific training from horticulture department extension workers.
