Bharmaur Temple Cluster: Ancient Sacred Architecture Chamba

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Bharmaur in upper Chamba district was the original capital of the Chamba kingdom for 400 years before the shift to Chamba town in the 10th century. The Chaurasi temple complex at Bharmaur containing 84 temples and shrines concentrated in a small area is the most important religious site in the high Himalayan regions of Himachal Pradesh. The main Manimahesh temple, Lakshna Devi temple with exceptional 7th-century bronzes, and Ganesh temple represent masterpieces of early medieval Himalayan temple art and architecture. The Manimahesh Yatra pilgrimage from Bharmaur to the sacred Manimahesh lake in August-September draws hundreds of thousands of devotees annually braving high altitude and difficult terrain. Traditional pilgrimage knowledge including route navigation, altitude acclimatisation, and spiritual protocol is transmitted by experienced pilgrims.
