Gaya Son Valley Wheat Farming Bihar

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Gaya district's Son river valley provides the irrigation backbone for wheat cultivation in the district's flat alluvial plains, with the Son Canal system irrigating tens of thousands of acres of rabi wheat that achieves 18-22 quintal per acre yields of HD-2967 and K-307 varieties. Gaya wheat is sold at the Gaya and Sherghati mandis and procured by the Bihar State Food Corporation for the public distribution system. Progressive farmers in Gaya's Son valley are adopting zero-tillage wheat planting after paddy, reducing fuel and labour costs while maintaining yields — the Bihar government promotes this conservation agriculture practice to reduce carbon emissions and increase soil organic matter in the river belt.
