Cane and Rattan Furniture Craft — Assam
Contributed by System
Assam and Tripura are India's largest cane-producing states. Cane (rattan palms — Calamus spp.) is harvested from forest and village homesteads, treated with borax and boric acid against borers, and woven or bent into furniture, baskets, mats, and decorative items. Assam cane furniture clusters in Lakhimpur, Nalbari, and Barpeta employ thousands of artisan families. The industry supports ₹500+ crore annual trade. Export buyers in Europe and USA prefer Assam cane for its strength and natural finish. Government cane-planting programs and ASIDE schemes support plantation establishment and cooperative marketing.
