In a significant move towards bolstering renewable energy infrastructure, India’s state-owned NTPC Limited has entered into a strategic partnership with EDF India Private Limited, a subsidiary of France’s Électricité de France (EDF). On February 23, 2025, during the Elecrama 2025 event, NTPC and EDF India signed a non-binding term sheet outlining their intent to establish a 50:50 joint venture company (JVC). The agreement was formalized by Federico D’Amico, CEO of EDF India, and J.C. Kakoti, General Manager of Hydro Engineering at NTPC, in the presence of NTPC’s Chairman and Managing Director, Gurdeep Singh, and EDF France’s Chairman and CEO, Luc Rémont. The formation of this JVC is subject to approval from the Government of India.
Scope and Objectives
The proposed joint venture will focus on several key areas:
- Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs): Utilizing off-peak electricity to pump water to higher elevations, PSPs store energy that can be released during peak demand periods, thereby enhancing grid stability and reliability.
- Hydroelectric Power Projects: Developing new hydroelectric facilities and optimizing existing ones to increase clean energy production.
- Bundled Renewable Energy Initiatives: Combining hydro projects with other renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, to create integrated and efficient energy systems.
