In a strong declaration against growing pro-monarchy sentiments, Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli reaffirmed that the nation’s democratic path is irreversible. Addressing a gathering in Kathmandu, Oli emphasized that Nepal’s hard-earned democracy will not return to monarchy, dismissing calls for a revival of the royal rule.
During his speech, PM Oli made it clear that the country’s democratic transformation, achieved after years of struggle, cannot be reversed. He took a dig at pro-monarchists, stating:
“Democracy has no reverse gear. Those dreaming of restoring the monarchy are living in an illusion.”
His remarks come amid increasing protests by monarchist groups demanding the reinstatement of former King Gyanendra Shah as Nepal’s ruler.
Nepal abolished its 239-year-old monarchy in 2008, following the 2006 People’s Movement that established a secular, federal republic. However, recent dissatisfaction with governance, economic struggles, and corruption allegations have led some groups to call for a return to monarchy.
Key reasons fueling this movement include:
In recent months, monarchist supporters have staged protests in major cities, demanding a referendum on the monarchy’s reinstatement. Many of these protesters, including youth groups and royalist politicians, argue that the current political system has failed to deliver prosperity.
On the other hand, pro-democracy activists warn that reinstating the monarchy could reverse Nepal’s democratic progress and undermine civil liberties.
PM Oli’s speech directly addressed pro-monarchist voices, including former King Gyanendra’s subtle political maneuvers.
Nepal’s democratic stability is crucial for regional politics. International reactions include:
To prevent instability and counter the monarchy movement, Nepal’s government must focus on:
PM Oli’s speech sends a clear message: Nepal will not return to monarchy. While challenges exist, strengthening democracy, economic reforms, and political transparency are the only paths forward. Whether the government successfully tackles these issues will determine the future of Nepal’s hard-earned democratic progress.
