From Corn Leaves to Bouquets: Vijay Biswa's 18-Year Dry Flower Craft in Meghalaya

Evacara Hynniewta

Tucked away in the lush landscapes of Meghalaya, Vijay Biswa has spent the last 18 years turning humble leaves into breathtaking works of art. A self-taught craftsman in the truest sense, his gift for dry flower-making wasn't learned from a book or a classroom — it was born within him. The ideas simply came, and with his hands, he brought them to life.

The Craft

Vijay specializes in dry flower handicrafts, with his crown jewel being the exquisite dry flower bouquet — a creation so delicate and lifelike, it stops people in their tracks. His flowers are sculpted from corn leaves and palm leaves, gathered straight from the forests of Meghalaya — natural, sustainable, and deeply rooted in the land he calls home.

To make a single rose takes just five minutes, but Vijay rarely makes just one. His signature product — a stick of four roses — comes together in about half an hour, each petal shaped with practiced patience and quiet pride. The finished sticks start at just ₹60, making beauty accessible to all.

The Mission

Vijay's work has never been just about flowers. It's about people.

He has trained housewives and aspiring artisans across Shillong and Nongpoh, including through the Sericulture Department, conducting training sessions that have already touched the lives of dozens. For him, every person who learns this craft gains more than a skill — they gain a livelihood, a purpose, and an independence that no one can take away.

"Handicrafts can be learnt and become a source of livelihood." — Vijay Biswa

The Road Ahead

Like many gifted craftspeople, Vijay's one honest challenge is marketing — getting his art in front of the eyes that deserve to see it. Everything else? He has mastered. The materials are accessible, the skill is transferable, and the product is one-of-a-kind.

He stands ready to share his wisdom with anyone who is willing to learn. Whether you're a curious beginner, a homemaker looking for a new beginning, or someone searching for a meaningful craft — Vijay Biswa's door is open.

Because in his hands, a dry leaf doesn't wither. It blooms.
