New Delhi, Jul 17 (PTI) A 21-year-old man died after alleged police detention in Mehrauli, prompting his family to accuse personnel of custodial assault, which police denied, attributing the death to a natural or old illness. However, a senior officer has now ordered a vigilance enquiry to probe the allegations. According to the family, Mehrauli police picked up Asif and his brother from their house in Chhattarpur Pahari on July 14 and took them to the police station. The family claimed Asif lost consciousness when he returned home from the police station, his condition deteriorated thereafter, and he was taken to Safdarjung Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. A senior police officer rejected the allegations, calling them "baseless". The officer said the locality had earlier been notorious for drug peddling and substance abuse, but sustained police action had completely removed drug addicts and peddlers from the area. The officer said no foul play was indicated in the medico-legal case (MLC), which showed no external injuries on Asif's body. PTI BM ASD ASD
