Mahoba (UP), Jul 15 (PTI) A 28-year-old man's hands were chopped off in an axe attack at a petrol pump in Mahoba district by a group of assailants while he was refuelling his motorcycle, police said on Wednesday.
District Hospital doctor SP Yadav said the victim is in a critical condition.
"Both his hands were almost severed and have been secured with support. He has suffered a deep cut on one leg and multiple sharp weapon injuries on the head," the doctor said.
Police said the incident occurred at 11 pm on Tuesday near a petrol pump in the Samad Nagar area on the Kanpur-Sagar Highway, where the victim, identified as Jaivendra Singh alias Vicky, had reportedly gone to refuel his motorcycle.
According to police and the victim's family, the attackers surrounded him and repeatedly struck him with axes before fleeing the scene.
Passersby alerted police, who rushed the injured man to the district hospital.
Doctors later referred him to a higher medical centre after his condition was found to be critical.
The victim's father, Raja Babu Singh, and brother, Alok Singh, alleged that BJP leader Shiv Pratap Singh Parmar -- said to be the district media in-charge of the party's youth wing, and his associates -- were behind the attack.
However, the BJP leader has not responded to the accusations.
Alok claimed the family had no previous enmity with the accused and alleged that political influence motivated the assault.
Additional Superintendent of Police Vandana Singh said after the victim's family complained, they lodged a case and formed police teams to arrest the accused. PTI CORR ABN ASD ASD
