Agartala, Jul 17 (PTI) An 80-year-old man was thrashed, garlanded with shoes and paraded before being tied to a pole in Tripura's Gomati district on Friday for allegedly raping his daughter-in-law, police said.
The accused was rescued by the police and sent to a nearby hospital.
The incident took place after the accused's son was found hanging from the ceiling of their house this morning.
"We received a memorandum signed by the villagers alleging that the octogenarian repeatedly raped his daughter-in-law for the last few months, as a result of which his son died by suicide," Nutanbazar police station officer-in-charge Bikram Debbarma told PTI over the phone.
Villagers turned violent after finding the accused's son dead and held him responsible, he said.
A video, which went viral on social media, showed the accused being paraded in the village after being garlanded with shoes, thrashed, and later being tied to a pole.
"We rushed to the spot and rescued the man, who is now under medical observation. A group of villagers sought lawful action against the elderly man, though no official complaint has been received yet," he said.
The police will take action as per the law once a formal complaint is registered, he added. PTI PS ACD
