New Delhi, Jul 17 (PTI) A 'Shabad Kirtan' was held at Gurdwara Rakab Ganj on Friday, marking the 100th martyrdom anniversary of Akali movement leader Sardar Teja Singh Samundri, Lok Niwas officials said. Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) Taranjit Singh Sandhu, grandson of Samundri, paid tributes, they said. Former President Ramnath Kovind, Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant, Gurusharan Kaur (wife of former PM Manmohan Singh), and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta attended the programme. Sardar Teja Singh Samundri, a leader of the Akali movement, was martyred in Lahore Jail on 17 July 1926 while serving the Panth, according to a Lok Niwas note. He was also a principal architect of the Gurdwara Reform Movement in the early twentieth century, a period marked by a determined struggle to liberate Sikh shrines from mismanagement and bring them under community control. He played a central and often unsung role in the affairs of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee during its formative years, quietly shouldering much of the organisational responsibility even as other leaders held more visible positions in the movement, the note said.
