Muzaffarpur, Jul 8 (PTI) Four days after the suspicious death of a woman at her residence in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district, police arrested her husband, a Block Development Officer (BDO), in connection with the incident, officials said on Wednesday.
Manoj Kumar, the BDO of Jale block in Bihar's Darbhanga district, was arrested for the alleged dowry death of his wife, they said.
During interrogation, Kumar claimed that his wife died by suicide after consuming some poisonous substance, the police said.
Kumar's wife Amrita was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her Mithanpura house in Muzaffarpur on July 3.
"Immediately after the incident, the deceased woman's family lodged a complaint with the local police station. In the complaint, they alleged that Amrita had been subjected to repeated harassment after her marriage because Kumar and his family members were demanding a dowry of Rs 10 lakh," Mohibullah Ansari, City SP (Muzaffarpur), told reporters.
Following the incident, Kumar went into hiding, and his mobile phone remained switched off, the SP said, adding that he was arrested by Muzaffarpur police on Tuesday evening. Besides, police are also investigating the accused's suspected extramarital affair, he said.
"Kumar's mobile phone, along with all the evidence collected from the scene, has been sent for forensic examination.The exact cause and circumstances of the incident will be determined only after the forensic reports are received and the police complete their investigation," the SP said.
