Itanagar, Jul 17 (PTI) An insurgent belonging to the banned NSCN-R outfit on Friday surrendered before security forces in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh, officials said.
The insurgent, identified as 'self-styled' Lieutenant Colonel Penngam Konyak (42), surrendered at the superintendent of police office in Khonsa.
Konyak, a resident of Nyasa village in Mon district of neighbouring Nagaland, laid down a pistol and some cartridges before a joint team of police, Assam Rifles and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Officials said the militant's decision to lay down arms was a result of sustained pressure and strategic psychological operations conducted by security forces to restore peace in the troubled Tirap district.
"This surrender reinforces the collective commitment of the administration and security agencies towards wiping out insurgency, restoring societal harmony, and creating an environment conducive to economic development in the region," a senior police officer said. PTI CORR ACD
