Alirajpur, Jul 13 (PTI) Amid growing public outrage over the brutal gangrape of a 40-year-old woman during a house robbery in Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh, police on Monday detained four persons and intensified the search for others involved in the incident, an official said.
Superintendent of Police Raghuvansh Kumar Singh told PTI that some of the silver jewellery stolen during the robbery has also been recovered from the possession of the four persons who have been detained.
"Based on clues found in the initial investigation, it appears that the number of accused could be around 10, and the search for the remaining accused is ongoing," the SP added.
A gang entered the woman’s house in a village under Bori police station limits to steal on Friday night. They raped her and she was brutalised by the accused, who inserted a wooden object in her private parts, as per police.
The woman was referred to a hospital in Indore, where doctors said her condition was stable after surgery and she is expected to be discharged soon.
Meanwhile, a large number of people gathered in front of Bori police station and staged a protest seeking death penalty for the perpetrators. They also raised slogans against the police.
The incident occurred in the home district of state Scheduled Caste Welfare Minister Nagar Singh Chauhan.
After meeting the victim's family, Chauhan said the state government is extremely sensitive to the incident and asserted the guilty will not be spared.
The minister said he has discussed the matter with police officials and appropriate steps will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, a five-member committee of the opposition Congress, including Tribal Congress national president Vikrant Bhuria, reached Bori to probe the matter.
The woman was subjected to cruelty similar to the Nirbhaya case of Delhi, Bhuria said.
Bhuria, also MLA from the state's Jhabua region, said the victim's family is being provided financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh by the Congress.
"The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is taking a lax attitude towards the incident. The adult son of the victim must be given a government job," Bhuria demanded. PTI HWP MAS BNM
