Panaji, July 12 (PTI) A 24-year-old man wanted in a case of murder and illegal possession of arms registered in Punjab has been arrested in North Goa, a local police official said on Sunday.
The accused, identified as Diljeet Singh alias Rahul, who hails from Amritsar, was apprehended by Mandrem Police during patrolling on Saturday when they spotted him moving suspiciously near a temple.
When questioned about his presence in the area, he allegedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation, prompting the police to detain him for further inquiry, police said.
Police said the accused's responses during interrogation were found to be "irrelevant and unsatisfactory", following which he was arrested under section 35 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
During interrogation, the police found that he was wanted in connection with a case registered at a police station in Amritsar wherein he was booked under sections 103 (murder), 109 (attempt to murder), 190 (every member of an unlawful assembly guilty of an offence committed in prosecution of the common object) and 191 (rioting) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), along with sections of the Arms Act for illegal possession and use of firearms.
Goa Police contacted the station house officer of the concerned police station in Amritsar about the arrest, the official said.
The accused has been remanded to judicial custody, while a team from Punjab Police is expected to reach Goa on Monday to obtain his transit custody, he added. PTI RPS NSK
