Gorakhpur (UP), Jul 16 (PTI) Frustrated by a delay in reuniting with his estranged wife after village-level mediation, a man allegedly stabbed both her and his mother-in-law at his in-laws’ residence here, leaving his wife in critical condition, police said. Officials said the incident took place on Wednesday night and the injured woman was admitted to the Nehru Hospital of BRD Medical College, where her condition remains serious. Vinod, 37, a resident of Moharipur under the Chiluatal police station area, married Lalita, 34, a resident of Langri village under the Gulriha police station, around 13 years ago and has three children: two sons and a daughter, police said. On Wednesday afternoon, Vinod arrived at his in-laws' house with relatives to take his wife, who had been staying at her parental home for some time following a family dispute, back home. Police said a village-level mediation meeting was held between both families and during the meeting, they agreed that Lalita would return to her husband's home on Sunday. Although the matter appeared settled, Vinod was reportedly unhappy with the decision. Police said around 8 pm, Vinod allegedly purchased a kitchen knife from a roadside vendor and returned to his in-laws' house. "At the time, Lalita and her mother, P Devi, were on the terrace of the house amid a power outage. Following a brief argument, Vinod allegedly attacked Lalita with the knife, inflicting a serious injury to her abdomen. When Devi intervened to save her daughter, she was also attacked and injured," police said. The accused fled the spot after the incident. On receiving information, Gulriha police rushed to the scene. Based on a complaint lodged by Shabnam, Lalita's sister-in-law, they registered a case against Vinod under attempt-to-murder and other relevant sections of the law. Additional SP City Nimish Patil said the accused has been detained and is being interrogated. Further investigation is underway. PTI CORR ABN ASD ASD
