New Delhi, Jul 16 (PTI) A man allegedly shot a woman dead and then died by suicide in a rented house in Burari here on Thursday, with police suspecting it may have been a suicide pact, an officer said. Police said they received a PCR call about two people lying dead in a flat, rushed to the spot, and launched an investigation. They said the woman's younger sister discovered the bodies around 3:30 pm when she returned home from work. After finding the door locked from inside, she alerted the landlord. Together, they forced the door open, police said, adding that they found both occupants lying inside with gunshot injuries and immediately informed police. Investigators said the woman, a native of Uttar Pradesh, lived in the rented accommodation with her sister, while the man, a resident of Haryana, lived separately in north Delhi, and visited her house on and off. "Preliminary investigation suggests the two had been in a relationship for the past few months. Prima facie, it seems that this was a suicide pact and was done under mutual understanding. We are waiting for the crime and forensic teams for further details," a senior police officer told PTI. "We received information on Thursday afternoon about the bodies of a man and a woman inside a rented house in Burari. A police team reached the spot and found that both had sustained gunshot injuries and were dead," Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Raja Banthia said. The investigation indicates that the man first allegedly shot the woman and then turned the weapon on himself. The two had been in a relationship for the past six to eight months. "Initially, we learned that the relationship was not progressing as the man expected, which appears to have caused him distress," the DCP said. However, police said the exact motive is yet to be established and all aspects are being examined. Police said before the incident, the man had sent text messages to his family members explaining the reasons for his distress and the personal issues he had been facing. Police have recovered the messages and are examining them as part of the investigation. Police visited the scene, conducted a forensic examination, and initiated further legal proceedings. The DCP said family members’ statements are being recorded and the investigation is underway. Police said they are ascertaining the exact sequence of events and the circumstances leading to the deaths. PTI BM SSH ASD ASD
