Azamgarh (UP), Jul 10 (PTI) A man and his grandson were killed allegedly over a land dispute in the Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Friday.
According to the police, the axe allegedly used in the crime has been recovered and multiple teams have been formed to nab the accused.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr Anil Kumar said that the incident occurred in the Hevati Dihva village under Pavai police station limits. At around 1.30 am, unidentified criminals killed Jagdamba Prasad Yadav (70), who was sleeping near a tubewell, by slitting his throat with an axe. Subsequently, they went to his house and attacked his grandson Shrivanshu Yadav (25), alias Ankit, with the axe while he was sleeping on the verandah.
The SP said that Ankit's grandmother Phoolkumari heard a noise during the night and called out to him but received no response. She then woke up her other grandsons sleeping inside the house. Ankit was found lying critically injured. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
When family members went to the tubewell to call Jagdamba Prasad, they found his body lying there.
Senior police officials, a forensic team, and a dog squad arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation. The police also recovered the axe allegedly used in the murders from a sugarcane field located about 100 metres from the crime scene.
According to the police, Ankit's brother Shiv Kumar Yadav alleged that the crime was committed due to an ongoing land dispute and old enmity with neighbours.
A case has been registered based on the formal complaint, and multiple teams have been constituted to arrest the accused, the police said, adding that the investigation is proceeding on all fronts, and the case will be solved soon. PTI COR NAV MNK MNK
