Kerala: Circle Inspector booked for trying to free detainees from lock-up

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 17 (PTI) A Circle Inspector was booked on Friday for allegedly entering the lock-up at the Nedumangad police station here and attempting to free detainees, including his relative, after they were taken into custody following a clash, officials said. The accused was identified as Yahiya (52), a native of Chullimanoor here, who is currently attached to the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB). According to the police, a clash broke out between two groups following a football match at Chullimanoor, following which several persons, including a relative of Yahiya, were taken into custody and brought to the Nedumangad police station. Officials said Yahiya reached the station around 1 p.m. and demanded that his relative be released. According to the FIR, he allegedly entered the lock-up where the detainees were lodged and attempted to release them. When police personnel tried to prevent him and escort him out of the lock-up, he allegedly threatened them and created a ruckus, obstructing them from discharging their official duties, the FIR said. The officials later overpowered him and brought him out of the lock-up. Police registered a case against him under Section 117(e) of the Kerala Police Act for threatening, obstructing or assaulting a police officer with the intention of preventing the officer from discharging official duties. During a medical examination at a government hospital, Yahiya was found to be under the influence of alcohol, police said. A report would be submitted to higher authorities recommending disciplinary action against the officer, they added. PTI TBA TBA ROH
