Mangaluru (Karnataka), Jul 6 (PTI) Two persons have been arrested for allegedly attempting to cheat a bank by pledging tampered gold ornaments with an inflated weight, police said. The incident occurred in Kadaba taluk of Dakshina Kannada district, they said. The suspects identified as Mohammed Fayiz (20), a resident of Uppinangady, and Mohammed Mursheed (45), a resident of Kasaba in Bantwal, have been detained in connection with the incident, police said. According to police, the incident came to light on July 3 after the Kadaba Police received information that two persons were behaving suspiciously in Kadaba town. A police team reached the spot and questioned the duo, who said they had come to pledge around 120 grams of gold ornaments at a bank. Suspecting foul play due to their behaviour, police brought them to the police station for further inquiry. During questioning, the two allegedly failed to produce documents relating to the ownership of the ornaments or provide a satisfactory explanation regarding them, a senior police officer said. Police said the accused later disclosed during interrogation that the ornaments had been tampered with to increase their apparent weight and that they intended to pledge them at a bank to fraudulently obtain money. A case has been registered at the Kadaba Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and further investigation is underway, police added. PTI COR AMP KH
