Jaipur, Jul 15 (PTI) Doctors at the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) hospital in Jaipur have successfully reattached the nearly severed genital of a 29-year-old man following a life-threatening assault, enabling him to return to normal life after around 40 days of treatment, officials said.
The hospital said the man sustained a near-total amputation of his genital organ in an attack with a sharp-edged weapon.
Doctors, on the occasion of World Plastic Surgery Day, said any significant delay in treatment could have resulted in permanent complications.
The patient was brought to the SMS Hospital Trauma Centre within about four hours of the incident, following which the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department carried out an emergency reconstructive procedure the same night.
During the operation, surgeons carried out microsurgical repair of the damaged urethra, corpus spongiosum and corpora cavernosa. Continuous post-operative monitoring and specialised treatment helped preserve the organ's function, Head of the Department Dr Rakesh Kumar Jain.
After nearly 40 days of treatment, the patient recovered completely and was able to urinate normally, it said.
Dr Jain said plastic surgery extends far beyond cosmetic procedures and plays a vital role in the treatment of road accident victims, industrial injuries, amputations, severe burns, post-cancer reconstruction and congenital deformities.
"Plastic and reconstructive surgeons not only restore the body but also help patients regain their confidence and dignity," he said.
Unit Head Dr Sangeeta Thakurani said timely medical intervention was crucial in such cases.
"Every minute is precious in cases of severe injuries or amputations.
Prompt treatment can often save an organ that might otherwise be considered beyond recovery," she said. PTI SDA APL APL
