Fraudsters impersonate Bengaluru DCP on Facebook to dupe victims
PTI1 min read
Bengaluru, Jul 14 (PTI) DCP M Narayana on Tuesday warned the public against cyber fraudsters using a fake Facebook account in his name to cheat people.
The senior police officer, who is posted as the DCP of Electronic City, said the fraudsters have created a Facebook profile named "Narayana M, IPS" and claim to be selling household items at very low prices.
"They tell people the items belong to CRPF, Army or police personnel who have been transferred and want to sell their belongings," the officer said in a video statement.
After convincing people to choose the items, the fraudsters ask them to transfer money. Once the payment is made, they switch off their phones and disappear, the DCP said.
Police have registered cases in Hebbagodi, Vijayapura and Kolar in connection with the fraud.
Narayana clarified that he has never asked anyone to buy items on his behalf. He urged people not to fall for such scams.
He advised victims to report such incidents to the nearest police station, block the fraudsters' phone numbers and call the national cybercrime helpline 1930. PTI AMP ADB
