New Delhi, Jul 10 (PTI) To ease congestion and improve traffic flow across the national capital, Delhi Traffic Police has made eight road stretches signal-free after studying 25 corridors and is examining another 25 stretches for similar interventions, an official said on Friday. Addressing a press conference, Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Manish Aggarwal said the department is focusing on long-term engineering solutions and sustained enforcement to improve traffic movement. "We have completed the study of 25 road stretches. Eight of these have already been made signal-free. Another 25 stretches have now been identified, and similar studies are being carried out there to examine the feasibility of making them signal-free," he said. The officer said analytical data from navigation platforms indicated that congestion decreased on several corridors during the October-December period following coordinated traffic management measures. "Our primary objective is better regulation of traffic. Consistent enforcement has also resulted in improved road discipline and has positively influenced commuter behaviour," Aggarwal said. He said 62 congestion points across the city were reviewed in a meeting chaired by the Lieutenant Governor, and following this, the traffic police worked with civic agencies to remove bottlenecks. "Noticeable improvement has been observed at several locations. However, results at four stretches were not satisfactory and structural changes have been suggested to the concerned agencies," he said. As part of its monsoon preparedness, the traffic police identified 169 waterlogging-prone locations in coordination with civic agencies. Aggarwal said while waterlogging during intense rainfall cannot be completely prevented, the response time is expected to improve due to better coordination among departments. He said the traffic police also received about 1,200 additional personnel from the Delhi government for the monsoon season and they will be deployed on a rotational basis to manage traffic and respond to rain-related congestion. Aggarwal announced the launch of "Traffic Pathshala", an initiative aimed at educating commuters about road safety, traffic discipline and responsible driving practices. PTI BM ASD ASD
