New Delhi, Jul 7 (PTI) Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi on Tuesday inaugurated a Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (RRR) Centre and a selfie point developed by transforming a 'dhalao' at Delhi University north campus, saying public participation and waste segregation at source are key to tackling the capital's garbage problem.
According to the official statement, the transformation of the 'dhalao' was carried out with the assistance of Miranda House College. Miranda House Principal Bijayalaxmi Nanda and senior MCD officials were present at the inauguration.
"Cooperation from residents is essential to eliminate Delhi’s garbage mountains. We urged people to segregate wet and dry waste at source; it would help reduce the burden on landfills,” Wahi said.
The mayor also thanked the principal, teachers and NCC students of Miranda House for helping convert the garbage depot into an RRR Centre. He said the college was already recycling and reusing paper and suggested that the model could be replicated across the city.
Explaining the concept behind the facility, Wahi said the Civil Lines Zone RRR Centre has been developed by reusing discarded materials and converting waste into public assets. Wahi said 45 discarded tyres and more than 3,000 old bricks were used in its construction.
The mayor further said that the centre would function as a community collection point where people can donate old clothes, toys and e-waste so that these items can be recycled and put to use again.
Wahi said the MCD remained committed to the vision of a clean city and was making every effort to create a cleaner and better city. PTI VBH VBH APL APL
