New Delhi, Jul 13 (PTI) The Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) on Monday resolved to abstain from work on July 14 in view of the Delhi High Court's full court favouring the enhancement of pecuniary jurisdiction or financial limit of district courts here from Rs 2 crore to Rs 10 crore. In a resolution passed by its executive committee, the DHCBA said that the proposed enhancement would substantially impact the justice delivery system as well as the practice, livelihood and professional interest of a large number of its members because it would reduce the cases in the high court by nearly 70 per cent. "The Executive Committee of the Delhi High Court Bar Association in its emergency meeting held on 13.07.2026 has unanimously resolved to abstain from work on 14.07.2026, in light of the view of the Honb'le Full Court of the Delhi High Court with respect to the enhancement of the pecuniary jurisdiction of the district courts in Delhi from Rs 2 crore to Rs 10 crore, in spite of strong opposition from the DHCBA," the resolution said. "The Executive Committee arrived at the above decision after duly noting the serious adverse consequences likely to be faced by the members of the Delhi High Court Bar Association. Accordingly, it has been resolved to call for abstention from work on 14.07.2026," it said. Enhancement of the district courts' pecuniary jurisdiction from Rs 2 crore to Rs 20 crore has been a long-pending demand of the Coordination Committee of All District Court Bar Associations of Delhi. On July 11, the coordination committee issued a letter of gratitude to its members on the high court finding favour with the enhancement of the pecuniary jurisdiction to Rs 10 crore. On July 10, the high court's division bench of Justices Anil Kshetarpal and Tejas Karia dismissed a plea by DHCBA seeking a stay on the presentation of the 'Pecuniary Jurisdiction Report' before the full court following the coordination committee's representation on the issue. According to the DHCBA, the high court could not have acted on the representation as the power to enhance the pecuniary jurisdiction was with Parliament as it involved amending the Delhi High Court Act.
