New Delhi, Jul 16 (PTI) Grief pervades the Sonipat house of a policeman who died after being run down by a speeding car at Delhi's Singhu border. An abrupt end to all the career glory that was to come the way of the freshly promoted head constable weighs on them endlessly.
Amit, a 34-year-old traffic cop, had recently been promoted from the post of constable to the pride of his family.
"He was installing a speed-monitoring device on a roadside, doing his duty. A speeding car came from behind, hit him and threw him away," his brother said, recalling the phone call that shattered the family on Wednesday evening.
The news of the accident reached them around 6.30 pm. Amit was rushed to a hospital but could not be saved.
Amit is survived by his wife, two children and his parents.
His uncle, Rameshwar, said the family had lost a dedicated policeman who remained committed to his duty till his last breath.
"He was on duty, checking traffic. He was only 34. The police have arrested the accused and seized the vehicle. We demand strict punishment," he said.
Several senior officers from the force and Amit's colleagues rushed the hospital to ask after him and later paid him tributes.
A fellow head constable remembered him as a hardworking and humble officer.
"He was extremely happy after becoming a head constable. He worked sincerely and never hesitated to take responsibility. We will always remember him," said the member of the force.
Another colleague described Amit as a man from a modest background who earned everyone's respect through his soft nature.
Neighbours remembered him for his discipline and commitment towards his family and profession.
Police have arrested Kuldeep alias Karan and Neeraj in connection with the hit-and-run and booked them at Alipur Police Station. The car they were in has also been seized.
According to the police, Amit was regulating traffic at the Singhu border around 6 pm on Wednesday when a speeding car rammed into him from behind. PTI BM VN VN
